Swahili
Swahili is the national language and is spoken by almost everyone after their tribal mother tongue.
English is second to Swahili and is mainly the language of Commerce, tourism and higher education.
Some of the service providers in hotels, banks and restaurants speak other foreign languages such
as French, German and Italian.
Tanzanians are eager to teach Swahili to foreigners. They are happy to let you know greetings and simple phrases like "Welcome . . . Where are you from? . . . How do you do? . . . No problem . . . etc" in Swahili. Actually you will hear these phrases in Swahili as soon as you land in Tanzania.
